The answer depends on three things: the wall you have in mind, how you intend to display the print (alone or as part of a group), and the kind of presence you want the image to have in the room. This guide covers each of those considerations clearly, so you can make the decision with confidence.
The Three Sizes at a Glance
EKKOVISUALS prints are available in three formats:
- A4 — 21 × 29.7 cm / 8.3 × 11.7 in
- A3 — 29.7 × 42 cm / 11.7 × 16.5 in
- 50 × 70 cm — 19.7 × 27.6 in
Each is a significant step up in scale from the last. The jump from A4 to A3 doubles the surface area. The jump from A3 to 50 × 70 adds another 75%. These are not minor differences — they change the nature of how the image functions in a room.
A4: The Intimate Format
At 21 × 29.7 cm, the A4 print has a considered, almost personal quality. It is the size you look at from close range — at a desk, on a shelf, as part of a tightly arranged gallery wall where the prints sit close together.
A4 works well in smaller rooms and spaces where wall area is limited: a study, a bathroom, a bedroom corner, a kitchen. It is also the ideal format for a first print — a way to bring a specific image into your home without making a large spatial commitment.
Best for: Desks, shelves, small walls, bathrooms, closely arranged gallery walls, gifting.

A3: The Most Versatile Size
At 29.7 × 42 cm, the A3 print is our most popular format — and for good reason. It is large enough to hold its own on a wall when displayed alone, and proportionate enough to work within a multi-print arrangement without dominating it.
A3 is the right choice for most living room and bedroom applications: above a bed, beside a sofa, in a hallway, above a console or sideboard. It reads as considered and deliberate from across the room, and rewards closer inspection with the detail that fine art printing makes possible.
If you are unsure between A3 and 50 × 70, ask yourself: is this print going to share a wall with other things, or is it going to own that wall? If it is sharing, A3 is almost always the right choice. If it is going to be the single focal point of the wall, consider 50 × 70.
Best for: Bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, above furniture, mixed gallery walls.
Prints that work particularly well at A3: Silence in the Landscape, Open Horizon, Beneath the Canopy, Forest Silence.
50 × 70 cm: The Statement Format
At just under A2 in scale, the 50 × 70 cm print is designed to anchor a room. This is the format you choose when you want the image to be the first thing a person notices when they walk through the door — when you want the art to define the space, not decorate it.
At this scale, the technical qualities of fine art printing become fully visible. The tonal range of an archival giclée print on 230gsm matte paper has a richness and depth that is simply not apparent at smaller sizes. A print like Light Through the Clouds or Nordic Winds at 50 × 70 cm is a genuinely different experience from the same image at A3.
50 × 70 works best on walls with genuine space around it. Give it at least 30–40 cm of clear wall on each side. It does not need company — this is a format that works alone.
Best for: Main living area walls, feature walls, open-plan spaces, hallways with height, stairwells.
Prints that work particularly well at 50 × 70: Nordic Winds, Light Through the Clouds, Circular Perspective, The Road Within, Raw Machine.
A Practical Method for Deciding
Take a piece of paper or card and cut it to the dimensions of each size you are considering. Hold it against the wall. Step back to the distance you would normally view it from. This takes two minutes and removes most of the uncertainty immediately.
Alternatively: measure the width of the wall space you have in mind, and aim for a print that occupies roughly 50–70% of that width when displayed alone, or 30–50% when part of a larger arrangement.
Framing Across All Sizes
All three sizes use standard frame dimensions, available from most home stores and online retailers. A4 and A3 frames are particularly easy to find. 50 × 70 cm is a standard poster size, also widely available.
For A4 and A3 prints displayed in larger frames, we recommend adding a white mat (passepartout) to increase the perceived size of the print and give it a gallery-like presentation. A4 in a 30 × 40 cm frame with a white mat, for example, reads significantly larger than A4 in a standard A4 frame.
Still Unsure?
Our most common recommendation to first-time buyers is A3. It is the format that works in the widest range of spaces, that holds its own as a single print, and that leaves room to add other prints around it over time without overwhelming the wall.
